Interesting comments on an interesting invention.
I appreciate the ability to set an alarm in game. I don’t remember if the “send me an alert at a given time” feature in Star Wars Galaxies always helped me get to bed on time, but I always used it. Everquest 2 has the same feature.
WoW has parental controls, where you can set the exact hours that an account will be available. “Note that if a player is logged in during a timeslot that has now been restricted, he or she will be automatically logged out when the schedule goes into effect.” THANKS, MOM.

More group-oriented players seem to like it. I’m in a high-end raiding guild right now, thanks to the generosity of a coworker, and I see my guildmates arranging events at “6:00 server time” and so forth.
However, if the game showed you both times, it’d make the UI more complex. Throughout the WoW UI, they’ve removed information you don’t really need. I’ve been collecting screenshots for an article on that.
Shadowbane had a lot of systems with pre-scheduled events, and while the server operated on GMT, the client would display the times in the client machine’s Windows time zone. I’m in CST, so the client says this event will happen at 6 pm; you’re in PST, so the client says this event will happen at 4 pm. I intended for it to be convenient. Looking back now, I wonder if it was just confusing.
