More on Official Wikis

In response to LOTRO’s community features announcement, I asked about the challenges of maintaining an official game wiki. Puzzles Pirates already has one, and Rob at pkurflax has kindly written an article about it.

” … the YPPedia is mostly a labor of love for a portion of our playerbase, who probably equate documenting the game’s history and features to a sort of ‘high-level game’.”

That’s explorers for you.

Let’s look at some stats.

I put them all in Excel.

I was curious if a more, uh, rabid fanbase lead to increased wiki activity. Discounting page views, since not all of the wikis provided them, and without any accurate subscriber counts, we’re left with ratios of wiki users to other stuff.

Well then. I don’t have any conclusions to take away about YPPedia, but I could use this data to back up some generalizations about Vanguard and EQ2’s fans.

What do you see in the data?

I don’t know if it makes much difference (since you couldn’t get views on it) but I bet that only a fraction of the people who use Wikipedia actually have users. I know I don’t have one and I use Wikipedia all the time. It may be the case that other more active Wikis (like WoWWiki) are in the same boat.

What the data really says to me is that Vanguard’s Wiki denizens are just as hard-core as the game. :)

Actually, the first thing to jump out at me is the number of admins listed for the YPPedia site. All of Y!PP’s support staff, as well as the lion’s share of the company’s engineers/artists, have bureaucrat and sysop powers on the YPPedia, but only a very, very small portion of them actually utilize them on a regular basis. Couple that with the fact that not all of our player volunteers are voraciously active, and you can probably peg the effective number of YPPedia’s admins at 10 or 12.

That said, it would thus appear that *all* of the Wikis examined (barring Wikipedia, of course) are maintained by an active policing squad of about a dozen people. Heh. Kind of makes you wonder if that’s what’ll end up happening to the LOTRO Wiki.

Yeah, registered users isn’t a great number. You’d need better data than the default MediaWiki stats page to work out contributing users. We’ll make do with what we have!

By the numbers, WoW Wiki appears to run a very tight ship, and by just reading the site, you can see they have really fantastic content. I wonder how well known it is in the greater WoW community. If the comments on Thottbot are any indication, they’re probably better off under the radar. :)

Well, I for one don’t contribute to WoWWiki because it’s really rather burocratic. Take that as you may.

MMO’s aren’t alone in having really active wikis. Look at http://community.bistudio.com/wiki

BIS have some /really/ rabid fans.
