Thinking back to my Auto Assault experience, there seems to have been a lot of untapped potential for visual character (vehicle) customization. When dealing with machines, rather than humanoids, the character’s form can be altered more radically without detracting from its categorical identity (species, civilization, etc.).
Think in terms of a boxy Volvo and a rounded BMW. You could add any numbers of additional parts to the vehicle (a hood-gun, tracks instead of normal wheels, jet propulsion, etc.) while still maintaining the brand identity just by ensuring that one always appears rounded and the other boxy. More immediate group identities (class, for example) can also be maintained through broad categories which allow radical customization. A stealth class may always be more elongated, while a brute class may always have a bulky face/head.

So perhaps there’s an emphasis on vehicles, eh?
