Back In the Saddle

I have joined the DC Universe Online team at SOE Austin. Here’s a recent preview of the game.
As always, I continue to speak for myself and not for Sony Online Entertainment. I signed a form saying so!
In other news, Blizzard has announced that come Wrath of the Lich King, many UI settings and macros will be saved server side. I’ve been meaning to do a blog post on stuff that should be saved server side … you know, stuff that makes players think you’re kind and considerate and care about the plight of players who play on multiple machines, but really just gives you lots of interesting things to data mine. Hard drive space is cheap, it earns goodwill, and you can build charts.

Congratulations!
What gets saved on the server and what gets saved on the client was always sort of random on Pirates. Toolbars (and just about nothing else) ended up on the server because “that’s how Joe did it” and not really as part of any plan. That’s something I hope to do a better job of on the new stuff at DBZ.

Congratulations, and good luck with DC Universe!
Earlier this year, I want to say at least six months ago, other people on the Dungeon Runners team took a long hard look at all the preferences being saved locally. They started separating them out into machine- or hardware-dependent settings (resolution, most recent account used, etc.), account-dependent settings (most recent character used, social preferences), and character-dependent settings (e.g. loot preferences).
The end goal - we were making strides, but not done by the time I left - was to make sure that two people playing the same software install on the same computer had their own preferred experience, and one person using two computers (for the same account, but at different times) didn’t have to constantly apply the same preference twice.
In our experience, the way to really motivate ourselves to make those kinds of changes required us to play the game. You play at the office, you play at home, and you notice how annoying it is that you get spam group invites at work, even though you REMEMBER changing that setting.

Congrats with the new job! On Anarchy Online I lobbied for a while to get settings like the hotbar and macros saved server-side, but in the end nobody ever seemed to agree that it was “worth it”. Because, you know, 95% of the customers only ever play on one machine.
But they have to reinstall that machine every now and then, and sometimes they have a laptop, too, and… I still think it’s The Right Way.

Congratulations on your new job! That didn’t last long! I’ve been following DCUO and it’s competitor Champions Online, for awhile so I look forward to seeing what you guys do!
I am glad for Blizzard deciding to save Macros server-side, as I play on a couple computers and it’s annoying to expect a macro to be there and find it gone.

Indeed, there are wars over land and wars over resources, and this, the United States knows well, for over the course of its history it has initiated many of them, and most of the wars over land and resources over the past 60 years have been planned at the Pentagon. ,
